For 75 years we have lived in freedom in the Netherlands. What binds us in 2020 is that we live in a free country where we have the freedom to say what we think, to believe what we want. To be who we want, without hunger or fear.
What is freedom? What is unfreedom? Bridge to Liberation -Screen Experience- in 2020 is about regaining freedom from unfreedom and how fighting for one’s freedom can lead to unfreedom.
We need each other to guard our freedom.
We are responsible for each other’s freedom.
Verhaal: FREE
With Operation Market Garden, the Allies came by air to end World War II. To liberate us. Many of them ended up in unfreedom precisely because of that. The resistance was needed to give them back their freedom as well.
The story in Bridge to Liberation is based on the personal experiences of Godfrey Freeman, recorded in the book Escape from Arnhem. About a young Army Air Corps (AAC) pilot who fought in the Battle of Arnhem. During the final days of defending the Arnhem bridge, Godfrey Freeman is captured by the Germans. After several failed escape attempts, he finally manages to escape from the train during his transport to Germany. But then the adventure really begins. After many wanderings, he comes into contact with the Dutch resistance, which helps him get through the German lines on a bicycle and escape to England.
What is freedom? What is unfreedom? Tonight’s Bridge to Liberation is about regaining freedom from unfreedom. Francis asked himself; what is it like to come face to face with unfreedom.
Francis asks this of 100-year Battle of Arnhem veteran Wilf Oldham and 28-year veteran Mike Frijns, Corporal First Class with the 11 Air Mobile Brigade. To empathize with his role. Because … our freedom is worth fighting for.
