On September 20th, we commemorate the sacrifices made in Arnhem for the freedom of the Netherlands and Europe with the commemoration ceremony in the presence of veterans and Bridge to Liberation, and on September 24th, during the evacuation commemoration, we commemorate the sacrifices made in Arnhem for the freedom of the Netherlands and Europe. We commemorate the Battle that completely destroyed the city, the casualties among soldiers and residents, and the large-scale evacuation. The Airborne Region is an initiative of the four Airborne Municipalities: Arnhem, Renkum, Ede, and Overbetuwe. We commemorate, reflect on, and experience together, and tell the shared story of the Battle of Arnhem. It covers the events of September 1944, but also the impact that history still has today.

Memorial Evening in Arnhem The memorial evening is on Friday, September 18, 2020. The full program will be announced at the end of August. Naturally, we will watch Bridge to Liberation -screen experience- at 8:30 PM.More information will be available at the end of August/beginning of September.Memorial Evening in the Eusebius Church The commemoration in the Eusebius Church is for veterans, their families, and other invited guests only.
Due to limited seating, screens have been placed at the Airborneplein so that this gathering can be experienced live. You can also experience everything from home; the memorial evening can be followed live on Omroep Gelderland. The guests of honor will walk in a silent procession from the Eusebius Church to the Airborneplein, where they will lay wreaths. You can attend this silent procession by taking a seat along the route. Commemoration ceremony at Airborneplein Everyone is warmly welcome at Airborneplein. The commemoration ceremony at Airborneplein can be attended on the upper ring of Airborneplein and not below. Because this year is a jubilee year, we expect many visitors. Therefore, please prepare well for your visit! Check www.arnhem.nl/airborne before you set off. The entire commemoration evening, including the wreath-laying at Airborneplein, and Bridge to Liberation can be followed live on Omroep Gelderland. Bridge to Liberation In 2022, you can experience Bridge to Liberation once again at the foot of the historic John Frost Bridge. You will meet people from the Airborne Region who convey the impact of war through their personal stories. With the knowledge we have now, we look back at the past to determine the value of freedom for ourselves.
To look forward, you must look back. Look in that mirror; see who you are. What echoes of the impact of war do we hear, and how can we incorporate them into our daily lives, now and in the future?
Special effects, performances by well-known artists, and dancers will once again make it a surprising experience! Bridge to Liberation starts at 8:30 PM. You can attend Bridge to Liberation live on Rijnkade in Arnhem or watch it on TV or livestream. Admission to Bridge to Liberation is free. Arrive early, as it's limited!
Watching the broadcast is, of course, free! The best way to experience Bridge to Liberation is on the Rijnkade at the foot of the John Frost Bridge, on TV, or via livestream.
We do not provide a public area on the south side of the bridge (Stadsblokken).
Winfried Baijens takes us on an evening filled with encounters with people who bear the impact of war and share their value of freedom. This year, the program features music by Wulf, Laetitia Gerards, Jim Bakkum, Ben Saunders, Phion Orchestra of Gelderland and Overijssel, and dance by Introdans. Together, they add color to the shared emotions.

Accessibility: It is advisable to travel by public transport, bicycle, or on foot. It is busy, and there are road closures and diversions. Arnhem Central Station is easily accessible from all over the Netherlands. The station is located within walking distance of the city center (5 minutes). The central bus station is also located here. There are various free guarded bicycle parking facilities in the city centre .To ensure the smooth running of the official commemoration and Bridge to Liberation, there are various road closures and diversions. Then park your car in one of the Arnhem parking garages . After 6:00 PM, a parking rate of 50 cents per hour applies. Accessibility (wheelchair and mobility impaired): On the upper ring of the Airborneplein, spaces are reserved for people with disabilities. You can go there yourself and will be assisted on site by hosts and hostesses. At Bridge to Liberation, a separate area is also reserved for people with disabilities, namely at the front on the Rijnkade. On the evening itself, you can report to a host or hostess, or register in advance at eva@bridgetoliberation.nl. There are sufficient disabled parking spaces in the city center. Thedisabled parking spaces at the Eusebiusbinnensingel are closed due to the guard of honor. Accessible toilets are available at the regular toilets on Oranjewachtstraat. A sign language interpreter will be present during Bridge to Liberation. If you wish to make use of this service, please register in advance at eva@bridgetoliberation.nl. Facilities: The First Aid post is located at Volkshuisvesting on Kadestraat (next to Jacob Groenewoudplantsoen). Go there in case of problems or unsafe situations. Various mobile First Aid posts will also be circulating. Toilets are available on Oranjewachtstraat. They are free of charge. There are also accessible toilets. Bars serving beer, wine, soft drinks, coffee, and tea are present at Rijnkade / Groenewoudplantsoen. You can pay by card or cash at the bars. The Bridge to Liberation will go ahead unless otherwise announced. Keep an eye on the Bridge to Liberation website and social media for the latest news in case of bad weather. Ponchos will be handed out in bad weather. Please do not bring umbrellas as they obstruct visibility and are dangerous to bystanders. If you wish to stay overnight, please take a look at Hotelsarnhem for all accommodation options. During the memorial evening, there will be low-flying aircraft making a lot of noise. During the Bridge to Liberation, (war) sound effects and fireworks will be used. An old-fashioned air raid siren will also sound once. During the events organized in the Airborne region during Airborne Week, (old-fashioned) (fighter) aircraft and helicopters will be used at various times.
