Louise Helder
Louise Helder
Country of birth: The Netherlands
Evacuated after the Battle of Arnhem (1944-1945)
The design
A dress made from old shirts; it's Liberation Day, and Louise, a girl in her blue dress and a bunch of marigolds, skips to where she awaits the queen. The movement of the skipping girl is reflected in the fluttering skirt. Along with Louise, we print the orange flowers on the shirts, visible on the shoulders. The large rosary reveals her youthfulness. The rosary was used during the war as a source of hope, but also distraction during anxious times.
